Sports Betting in the United States

November 8, 2021

Currently, only in-person sports betting is allowed in the state of Delaware. Online and mobile betting is still prohibited in Delaware.

Apart from the obvious exception of Nevada, Delaware became the first US state to legally accept a single-game sports bet. New Jersey was pushing for the same legislation at the same time, but Delaware won the race by a matter of weeks. This all came after the federal betting ban was struck down in 2018.

There are currently just three retail sportsbooks in the state of Delaware and, with no online or mobile betting to reinforce that, the total betting revenue numbers are rather low. Despite reacting quicker than most, Delaware may remain as somewhat of an afterthought due to its low population, no online wagering options, and more favorable regulations in larger neighbor states.

Statistics show that the state of Arkansas has handled around $409 million in wagered bets from June 2018 to September 2021. In that time, they have boasted revenue of over $62 million, a hold percentage of 15.4% and taxes collected of $41 million.
